A year of cinema releases has brought a slew of new, unique and sometimes downright disturbing offerings, and while some have proven a success, others have been a mixed bag.
As of this writing, there are more than 20 new releases on the 2017 calendar, including a few classics and cult classics that have yet to see the light of day.
Some of the best films are being released this year with the likes of The Purge, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, The Dark Tower, and the upcoming The Big Sick all expected to make a splash at the box office.
Below, we rank each of the films in terms of their quality, and what they could mean for the future of cinema.1.
The Purging, The Purges original film, the first film that made me realize there’s no such thing as a bad film, has an absolute perfect score.
While the story may be dark and gritty, it’s not as bad as some would have you believe.
It has a really engaging protagonist and a surprisingly emotional ending, making it an absolute must-see for any horror fan.
Plus, it has the highest overall score of any film released in 2017.2.
The Maze Runners, The Scorched Earth is the first sequel that has earned rave reviews and has a great score from me.
It’s not the greatest of films, but it does manage to be a solid, enjoyable horror movie.
The cinematography and score are just as good, as are the characters and their motivations.3.
The Big Sleeper, The Big Slasher is the best horror film that has ever been made.
I’m sure most of you are familiar with the original and the sequels, but The Big Skeleton has taken things to another level.
The film follows two brothers who wake up from a nightmarish dream and discover a monster on the side of the road.
They soon realize that their only chance to save their lives is to kill the monster, but as the film progresses, they learn that they’re not alone.
The final moments are a heart wrenching, suspenseful ride, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a better film on this list.4.
The Descent, The Descendants is a very different take on a supernatural horror story.
Instead of a haunted house, it focuses on a family in an apartment building that is threatened by a deadly virus.
The cast is stellar and it is directed by John Wells, who has a history of creating high-concept and imaginative movies.5.
The Dark Room, I’m still not sure how this film makes it onto this list, but its been an absolute success.
Its a dark, dark, and chilling thriller with plenty of scares, and it will probably be my go-to horror film this year.6.
The Darkness, The Darkness is a new film by filmmaker David Mackenzie.
It focuses on two teenage boys who discover a series of cryptic messages that lead them to believe that they are being watched and controlled by a sinister entity.
While its not exactly a horror film, it is a haunting, claustrophobic thriller that is very different from the other films that made the list.7.
The Mummy, The Mummies sequel is an absolute classic, a true classic that has not been released in nearly 20 years.
It is an extremely well-crafted film that does a great job of exploring the themes of death and hauntings, and in doing so, it also touches on the themes that are central to the franchise.8.
The Cabin in the Woods, A film that should be considered the most underrated horror film of all time.
It may not be a true horror film as such, but the film has the perfect blend of horror and adventure, which is why it was the first movie on this year’s list.9.
The Babadook, The Babads newest film, is a great addition to the series.
While it is an enjoyable thriller, the story is still pretty light and there are no zombies, ghosts, or vampires.10.
The Exorcist: The Beginning, The Exorcerists original film is a terrifying, suspense-filled thriller.
The characters are believable and the pacing is incredible.
It also has a killer villain.
It just might be the best film released this summer.11.
The Haunting, A movie that is both a thriller and a supernatural drama.
It was released a little over a year ago and I can say that it is not a perfect film, but I would say that its one of the most terrifying films on this short list.12.
The Last House on the Left, The Last Houses Left is a truly chilling, suspense story that is also a very well-made horror film.
It takes place in a dystopian world where a group of young people live in a house that is overrun with monsters.
The main character, Claire, is trapped inside the house with no way to escape, and she eventually finds herself in the arms of her mother
