A year ago, the world’s largest and most expensive construction project began in the South African capital, Pretoria, and the construction of an expensive, multi-million dollar building to house the city’s most valuable public works project, the new government said Monday.
Construction on the new $7 billion South Africa Building Development Project is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
The project, known as “The Palace of the Republic” in English, will be completed in 2026, the Ministry of Culture said in a statement.
It will be the world largest and largest public works building in the world, with the largest public space in the country.
It will also house the country’s largest museum and cultural complex, known locally as the KwaZulu-Natal Museum, which will feature the largest collection of African art and architecture.
The building will have a total floor area of 1.1 million square meters, which is larger than a city block.
Construction on the project began last year, but delays led to concerns about its quality.
The Palace will include the world-famous, iconic, royal palace, the South Africa House of Parliament, the National Museum of South Africa, the State Theatre and other sites, the ministry said.
The new building is expected for completion in 2027.
