Women in the US are embracing beachwear while men are embracing sportswear, and that trend is sparking an evolution in the way they approach the beach.
The men’s swimwear market is growing fast and women are increasingly opting for beachwear over jeans, flip flops and other shorts.
“We have a lot of men who don’t wear jeans and flip flop shorts but they still wear a swimsuit,” said David Dickey, a fashion strategist and founder of The Dickey Group.
“Men don’t really wear shorts and flip-flops, they wear beachwear.”
Mr Dickey said the evolution in styles has prompted a new mindset for beachgoers.
“There is an awareness that if you have a bathing suit on you, you can still look good and look fashionable,” he said.
“It’s the same with shorts, flip-tops and beachwear.
The new trend is to go all out and look good.
Men’s swimsuits are more comfortable and less costly than those made by women, but they don’t offer as much protection against the elements. “
In the past, there was a big emphasis on having a beach jacket or a swim suit on, but now you can’t really afford to go without.”

“Most people in the west wear beach clothes, even though it’s not very stylish,” Mr Dicke said.
“You have to go out and do it in the sunshine and in the water and be able to wear anything you want.” “

In Australia, women are now embracing shorts and long skirts, which are often worn with flip flotsam.
“I was really surprised to see that the trend was really spreading,” Ms Coughlan said.
Women are increasingly embracing beach wear while men have embraced sportswears.
“The trend in the summer has been to wear shorts with a flip-down shirt or flip-up jacket,” Ms Dickey added.
A recent study from the American College of Surgeons found that more than a third of women surveyed said they would not wear swimsuits under their bikini tops in public. “
But in the winter, there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that goes into the design and the fit of the suit.”

“If you’re going to go to the beach and look great, you’re definitely going to need a bathing jacket,” Mr Coughlans advice to women.
The Dickeys found women were embracing shorts as the best option, despite having a higher cost of living and being less physically active.
“One of the things that I’ve found is women love their swimsuits,” Mr Tinsley said.
Men are embracing shorts, but the women’s trend has created an issue for Mr Dics.
“When I look at what the women wear, they don the flip-out bikini top, they’re wearing a swim cap, they’ve got a long sleeve tee and the men’s version of a short-sleeved t-shirt,” Mr Mollins said.
Ms Caughlan said the new trend was “making waves”.
“I think that’s great, we’re all going to do what we want.
It’s up to the people to make their own choices,” she said.
In the US, the number of men wearing swimsuits has increased by 70 per cent since 2003.
“My biggest concern is that men’s wear is becoming more expensive and men are going to have to pay more for things,” Mr Naughton said.
But while some women are opting for the flip flotam, others are embracing more casual styles such as flip-back, t-shirts and jeans.
“As women grow more comfortable in their bathing suit, we are seeing more and more men wearing shorts,” Mr Phelan said.
The trend has also caught the attention of the fashion industry.
“This is something that we’ve seen in the fashion world before,” Mr Jollins of the American Institute of Architects said.
While Mr Jolls body style has changed since he started wearing suits, he still wears flip flannels and swimsuits.
“That’s how I dress,” he told The New York Times.
“Now I don’t have to think about the fit.
It was something I knew about before, I didn’t think about it.”
